Visas and legal stay
Which visa should I choose for a long stay in Vietnam?
Entry options depend on your citizenship and the purpose of the trip. Russian citizens can currently enter without a visa for up to 45 days or with an electronic visa (E-visa) for up to 90 days. A longer stay needs a different visa type or a temporary residence card. Details and current rules are in the knowledge base.
What is a visa run?
A visa run means leaving Vietnam and entering again on a new visa. Whether it suits you and how often it is possible depends on your visa and the entry rules in force — check them before you travel. More in the knowledge base.
Can I work remotely from Vietnam for a foreign company?
The rules for work depend on your visa and on who you work for; ask a lawyer or check the knowledge base.
Renting a home
How much does it cost to rent a flat in Nha Trang?
The price depends on the district, the floor, the distance to the sea and the length of the lease. See current prices in the catalogue.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
Owners often ask for a deposit. Write its amount and the terms of its return into the contract, and photograph the flat on the day you move in — it helps when you move out.
How do I protect myself from rental scams?
Do not pay a deposit before you have seen the flat in person. Check the owner's documents for the property (the certificate of rights to the land and the home, commonly called “sổ hồng” or “sổ đỏ”) and sign a written contract. Look the owner up in the blacklist and report a suspicious case there.
Money and banks
How do I get money in Vietnam?
People usually withdraw cash from a card at an ATM or open an account with a local bank. Which cards work in Vietnam, what they charge and what you need to open an account — ask your own bank and the local one in advance.
Where do I exchange currency?
At banks and official exchange offices. The rate differs from place to place: compare it before you exchange and count the money before you leave the counter.
Everyday life
What about the internet in Vietnam?
Home internet is connected by local providers; a rented flat may already have it — ask the owner before you move in. SIM cards with mobile data are sold in mobile operators' shops; take your passport when you buy one. Compare plans and speeds between operators.
What about healthcare? Do I need insurance?
Get insurance before you travel: without it you pay for treatment in full yourself. When choosing a policy, check that it is valid in Vietnam and what it covers — doctor visits, hospital stays, riding a motorbike. In local clinics you may need an interpreter.
Is Vietnam safe for foreigners?
In crowded and tourist places there are pickpockets and scammers — keep an eye on your belongings and documents. Traffic is heavy: cross the street with care and wear a helmet on a motorbike.
